The
term Impressionism was first used as an insult by critic Lewis Leroy when describing the painting
Impression: Sunrise by Claude Monet. He and his friends took the criticism and made it into their crown jewel. During the time of Impressionism, we can also see the
style affect other areas: Émile Zola (writer
and poet), Victor Horta (architect), and Claude Debussy (musician).
As we explore the visual artists and artwork of Impressionism, we need to keep
in mind the major parts of Impressionism:
Paint visible world.
Paint on sight.
Faithful to first impression.
Dissolving brush technique, known as ala prima (or painting wet into wet paint.)
Concentrate on how we see.
Emphasis on picture surface.
